Many women will have a repeat C-section once they have their first C-section, but not all women have to have a repeat C-section. A successful VBAC can lead to an easier recovery and shorter hospitalization. Patient selection is a very important component of having a safe and successful VBAC. A VBAC is definitely a high risk delivery due to the risk of uterine rupture, and some hospitals do not even offer VBACs. We are able to offer VBACs at INOVA Fairfax Hospital due to the level of care that is provided with 24 hour anesthesia, obstetricians for emergency C-sections, and level IV neonatal intensive care unit (NICU). Through individualized counseling and patient selection, we have been able to have a successful VBAC rate of 10%. You will need to have an in-depth discussion with your provider to see if you are a candidate for a VBAC.
