COVID-19 Vaccine Booster Doses
Bivalent mRNA COVID-19 vaccines are now the recommended vaccines for use as a booster for individuals aged 12 years and older.
Monovalent mRNA COVID-19 vaccines are no longer authorized for use as a booster dose for individuals aged 12 years and older.
- Anyone aged 12 years and older who completed an initial COVID-19 primary dose or COVID-19 vaccine series should receive a bivalent booster two months following their last primary dose or monovalent booster.
- Individuals, including pregnant individuals, age 12 years and older who already received a monovalent COVID-19 booster should receive a bivalent booster at least 2 months after their monovalent booster.
- Pfizer-BioNTech’s bivalent mRNA COVID-19 vaccine is available for individuals age 12 years and older.
- Moderna’s bivalent mRNA COVID-19 vaccine is available for individuals age 18 years and older.
Moderately to severely immunocompromised individuals should receive a booster dose following their primary 2- or 3-dose series:
mRNA COVID-19 Vaccines
- Moderately to severely immunocompromised individuals should receive a bivalent mRNA COVID-19 vaccine booster dose at least 2 months following their third primary series (additional) dose.
J&J/Janssen COVID-19 Vaccine
- A single bivalent mRNA COVID-19 vaccine booster dose is recommended at least 2 months after the 2nd (additional) dose, for a total of 3 doses (1 J&J/Janssen vaccine dose followed by 1 additional mRNA vaccine dose, then 1 bivalent mRNA COVID-19 vaccine booster dose).
Novavax COVID-19 Vaccine
- A single bivalent mRNA COVID-19 vaccine booster dose is recommended at least 2 months after the 2nd primary dose of Novavax COVID-19 vaccine.
